    Help Spread Some Holiday Cheer

    Helping Hands

Please join us on Sunday December 17th for the Helping Hands Holiday Caroling and Lights Tour.  All carolers will meet at the Grand Villa at 6 PM and will carol for Grand Villa residents and share some cookies.  We will then ride the St. Petersburg open air trolley through Broadwater enjoying the holiday decorations and stopping at designated points within the neighborhood to carol for neighbors.

Please note that the trolley is limited to the first twenty (20) people to RSVP.  Designated stopping points will include cul-de-sacs, central gathering points, and at the homes of residents.  The tour will end at Grand Villa around 9 PM.

This event is made possible through the Mayor’s Neighborhood Mini Grant Program.  A map of the event route will be posted here, on Nextdoor and on the Evite RSVP.  Click to RSVP for the trolley.

    Debris In Our Waters

Dirty Water in Broadwater CanalsMany of our landscapers routinely blow grass clippings and other yard debris into our waters and streets.  Did you know that no matter where this happens in Broadwater the debris will end up in our canals and Boca Ciega Bay?  Did you know that fines up to $10,000 can be levied for allowing yard debris, grass clippings or pet waste to enter our waters even via street drains?  This type of activity can contribute to algae blooms that lead to red tide and frankly make our canals ugly!  Your lawn service is required to know these facts as well.  In fact they are required to obtain a Best Management Practices (BMP) certification to do business in Pinellas County.  The BMP course is a one-time 3 hour course that all employees are required to take.  In order to protect our waters let’s be proactive and make sure that we and our lawn services are aware of and follow these practices.  If you observe illegal activity you should make the person aware and if it continues you should report it to Pinellas County.  Together we can keep our waters clean.  For much more information please visit St. Pete.org/Stormwater Operations.

    Carefest 2017

Carefest 2017On September 30th the City of St. Petersburg took part in Carefest.  Carefest is a national event dedicated to organizing volunteers for a variety of projects designed to improve the quality of life for neighborhoods and individuals in need.  Thanks go out to Vicki Linkovich, Evelyn Hill, Paul & Lee Krueger and Tom Ando for volunteering to staff the registration tables at Lake Vista Park.  Broadwater also adopted a project within the neighborhood on 43rd St S. and cleaned up some hurricane debris in the median on the 42nd Ave S entrance off 34th St S.  Thanks to Ken Lamoureux, Jonathan & Emma Kind, Kenny Larrison and Kristen Mory for volunteering their time and energy to help a neighbor in need.  Broadwater intends to participate in this event next year and we encourage everyone to get involved throughout the year and be Bee Caretagious!

    Helping Hands

On Saturday November 5th, a group of caring volunteers gathered at a home on 46th Avenue South to transform a front and back lawn, which has had multiple code violations, into a manageable, and much-improved low maintenance landscape.  The project was completed in 4 hours and was made possible via a $500 mini-grant from the City of St. Petersburg. During this event, Broadwater resident Kenny Bishop (owner with wife Judy of Kenny’s Lawn & Landscape Inc in St. Petersburg) provided heavy equipment, hauling and two crew members Devon and Socorro to lead the following neighbors in the yard overhaul:  Tom Ando, John Sackett, Paul Krueger, Kathy Farmer, Lowell Dexter, Kristen Mory, Kelly Bradshaw, Lynn Hobbs, Brenda Coefield, Cheryl Cook and John Braamse.  We can’t thank you all enough for making a huge positive neighborhood impact.  Volunteer hours for this project will also be used to match grant funding for the 38th Street project that is in progress. None of this would have happened without the incredible drive and organization of Kristen Mory who does so much for Broadwater and the Skyway Marina District.

We thank you for your passion and commitment to making Broadwater and our surrounding area great!!  When it comes to the Helping Hands program, the basic premise of the program is to help a neighbor in need, but also help the neighborhood and everyone who resides there. A quote from Shirley Chisholm sums it up nicely, “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining.  You make progress by implementing ideas.”  Thank you so much to all the volunteers who implement so many ideas for our neighborhood and community year round!  Click for more event pictures.

If you or a neighbor in Broadwater needs a helping hand or you would like to be a Helping Hands volunteer, please contact Kristen Mory at 727-688-9597 or kristenmory@yahoo.com

Your dues are appreciated and support the many activities of the Broadwater Civic Association.  Thanks to our 314 paid members in 2016.  We ended up at 59% and 8 more members than last year’s total.  The 2017 membership form was included in the Winter Broadwater breeze or you can download it here. Please feel free to add a donation to your membership fee to allow us to do more to improve our already great neighborhood.  Please be sure to fill out your membership form completely even if your information has not changed.  This will insure that we have your information up to date.

38th St project a huge success!

38th Street Beautification BeforeIt is hard to believe that one year ago we were just taking pledges for this project.  What a difference a year makes!!  This beautiful new entrance to 48th Ave S is a testament to what Broadwater is all about.  The diligence of John Sokol, Mike Zito and the rest of the committee members along with great cooperation from the City of St. Petersburg and the two bordering residents were the key ingredients to a successful project.

38th Street Beautification AfterThe monetary support from caring residents and a city grant funded the improvements and our volunteers are keeping this area looking great.  Thank you to all who made this a reality!

Living Local Broadwater is a video produced by the City of St. Petersburg showcasing our wonderful neighborhood.

Shay Brumbaugh and her crew did a great job capturing the essence of Broadwater with the help of Mike & Debbie Zito, Gerry & Lynne Moore, Mel & Priscilla Williams, Mike & Maria Roesner, The Joyner Family, Mike Milvain, Tom Ando and George Canizares.  The seven and a half minute video will run at various times on St Pete TV or you may find it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/bY5244DWjTQ.
3rd annual skyway marina district may day race

Thank you Broadwater for helping to make the May Day Race on May 6th such a great success!  The event hosted just over 500 participants ranging from ages 3 to 79.  Participants in the races got a beautiful tour of Clam Bayou, and the 10K racers ran/walked south on 37th street where they were greeted at a water stop by some of our steadfast Broadwater volunteers.  The event culminated with awards and a Kids Dash for Cash around the Ceridian campus.  The event also included food, a DJ, kids inflatable obstacle course, cash grab machine, vendors, free massages, and more.  Proceeds from the race will be donated to local Pinellas County Schools via the Pinellas Education Foundation and to the Skyway Marina District to support improvement projects within the district.  This event would not be possible without the incredible support from our local business sponsors and from all of our wonderful volunteers.  Broadwater volunteers included May Day Race Committee members Vicki Linkovich, Gia Ockuly, Lynn Hanshaw and Kristen Mory and race day volunteers Tom Ando, Mike Milvain, Kelly and Karlyn Bradshaw, John Deermount, Brian Shiely, Jeff Joyner and Evan Mory.  We thank and ask you to support our great sponsors: Ceridian, UPS Store, Flamingo Resort, Magnuson Hotel, Bay Moorings Animal Hospital, Maximo IGY Marina, Fit2Run, Anytime Fitness, Island Massage, Paradise News, Cadence Realty Group, Eckerd College, Grand Villa, My Spine & Joint, Tosti’s, Jeff Joyner & Associates Realtors, Wannemacher Jensen Architects, Brewburgers, Jabil Circuit, Oneill’s Marina, StorMax Self Storage,  BB&T Bank, Spare Room Mini Storage, Elite Watersports, St Pete YMCA, Endorphin Sports, Pinellas Point Civic Association, League of Women Voters, Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, Skyway Diner and the Broadwater Civic Association.  Photos can be viewed at can be viewed on Facebook at Skyway Marina District and May Day Race.

Where the Sidewalk [Literally] Ends by Edie Creter

May 1, 2017, another perfect biking day.

In the spring of 2013 I wrote a pictorial Breeze article (Where the Sidewalk Begins . . . ) after my first visit to Clam Bayou Nature Preserve, accessed at the end of 34th Avenue S (off 37th Street S) behind the Wal-Mart/Ceridian area. In the 4 years since that article, a new south side has been built and there is an addition to the north side.

  • Friendly Reminders
For Holiday Trash and Recycling Schedules visit http://www.stpete.org/sanitation/residential/holiday_schedule.php
Do not blow yard debris into the streets or canals.  This is illegal and can lead to algae blooms and fish kills
Please clean up after your pet.  It is against city ordinance to not pick up their waste so carry a bag and help keep Broadwater Beautiful!
By city ordinance (Sec. 27-471), customers may place both trash and recycling containers at the curb by 7 PM the night before collection and must be moved from the street by 7 PM the same day following collection.
Please discourage your dock company from using 38th St S (46th Ave to 48th Ave) to load materials.
Please be mindful of the speed limit in Broadwater especially with children out of school for the summer.
As a responsible homeowner you are required to maintain the gutter line in front of your property.  Keeping the gutter clean not only enhances the look of your property but also keep water flowing to the storm drains.  Standing water promotes algae growth and mosquito breeding.  Yard clippings should not be left in the gutter or swept into the storm drains as they will end up in the canal.  If you use a lawn service please remind them of these important points.
  • Helping Hands
