9th Annual Broadwater Holiday Party & Annual Meeting
Submitted by Evelyn Hill
Wow, what a fantastic party night December 9th was at the Armory. The room was dazzling with Christmas lights, beautiful balls and helium balloons. Gorgeous Poinsettias from Savannas Nursery and clever decorations finished off the room.
As the more than 200 guests entered with their scrumptious appetizers, side dishes and desserts to be shared with the Honey Baked Ham and Turkey the party began. Everyone enjoyed the music provided by "The Impacs and they really had the joint jumping. We wish to thank Greg Dent who supplied the 360 Vodka, Sean Nyitray for providing the beer, and Frank Vander Horst, of Marine America, who donated a day with a Tiny Tug boat (won by Kirk Price) to help raise money for our National Guard Families.
I want to thank the great folks who helped put everything together: Linda & Dana Farden, Dana & Tom Ando, Rhonda Fuller, Maria Roesner, Julie Reardon, Patricia Kent, Lee & Paul Krueger, Roger Sheahen, Jim Krellwitz, John Klement, Vicki Linkovich, Debbie Zito, Jamie & Frank Vander Horst, Mike & Junia Milvain, Cheryl Cook, Kris & Bruce Holtman, Mary Lisan, Daisy Melkey, Rick Janka, Tim Stevenson, Stacey Duchnowski, Ray & Gia Ockuly, Tim Parham, Anthony Morris and the man who always has my back Jim Hill. Broadwater is so blessed to have such a giving group of volunteers! Every year the celebration gets better and better and I hope the 10th Annual Party will be even better!
While we were having fun we also raised money for the families of our National Guard Troops. The boat raffle, the 50/50 raffle (won by Frank Vander Horst and donated back to the troops) and the great generosity that Broadwater always shows was matched dollar for dollar by the Broadwater Civic Association for a total of over $1500.00. The money goes to make sure the children of our troops have a very special Christmas.

Broadwater Neighborhood Grant Update
Installation of the new Broadwater signs is almost complete and based on residents emails Broadwater folks are pleased with the appearance.
The remaining items to complete the installation are:
- Put the final coat of glossy white paint on the sign posts.
- Install lighting at each sign location. This will require gaining approvals from the City Parks, Purchasing and Neighborhood Partnership Departments, so this will undoubtedly take some time.
- Install plants at 42nd Ave to replace the installed ground cover that was not acceptable to the home owner at that site. The current plan is to plant Aztec Grass.
- Install new mulch at all three areas.
As you can see from the charts we are doing well in accumulating the hours to reach the 960 volunteer hours necessary to retire the grant within the 2 year period specified in our contract with the City. As a reminder, the following items are excellent ways to generate volunteer hours and improve the appearance and the safety of our neighborhood:
- Landscape Maintenance such as weeding and pruning, including areas such as the traffic control barriers on 42nd Ave S and the recently installed sign plantings.
- Look for and remove trash on streets
- Look for and remove trash in canals
- Sign maintenance
- Hazardous Waste Pickup. If you deliver anything to the County Landfill on 28th St N the total time spent is chargeable as volunteer hours.
Lee Krueger can be seen doing many of these activities on a regular basis as she walks through Broadwater. She has accumulated a large amount of volunteer hours and we thank her for her time.
In regard to “landscape maintenance” it is important to note that under our City Partnership Grant Contract it is Broadwater residents that have the responsibility to maintain our common area landscaping. On September 10th a group of 10 volunteers spent 2 to 3 hours to clear the weeds and trim the plants along 46th Ave. while Phil & Edie Creter cleaned up the entry median on 42nd Ave S. I encourage ALL residents to be proactive and focus on the landscaped areas and take some time to weed and trim common area planting as needed rather than waiting to be asked. If many of us help it will take a surprisingly small amount of individual time. On the other hand it will require a major commitment if the maintenance is left to just a few of us.
For complete details, including online hour submittal, go to www.broadwaterfl.org or contact Mike Milvain at 727-866-9803 or mmilvain@gmail.com.
We are pleased to announce...Broadwater Grant approved for $25,000! (click here for details). To learn more on how you can help generate the 940 volunteer hours over the next 2 years, and help towards our goal of retiring the grant...read more on grants and volunteering.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
12th Annual Family Picnic
We were once again fortunate enough to have superb weather on Sunday, October 16th for the 200 folks who attended the 12th Annual Broadwater Family Picnic. Good food, music and fun for the kids (provided by Tasco), and great door prizes (provided by 55 of our generous local merchants) made for a fun time for all.
Thanks to Evelyn Hill and her great cast of volunteers, everything went very smoothly. Our chefs (Ray Ockuly, Dana Farden, Steve Cease, and Roger Sheahen) served hamburgers, hot dogs, and Johnsonville brats from the grill and our neighbors contributed some great appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. TASCO once again kept the music and games going while providing inflatables for the kids to enjoy.
Grand prizes were donated by the Tradewinds Resort, Marina Cove Resort, Diamonds Direct, It's About Hair and Outback Steakhouse. Please support these and the other 47 wonderful merchants who generously donated door prizes. We also were able to donate the entire 50/50 amount to a great cause.
Many thanks to the following folks for donating their time and energy making this event a success once again:
Evelyn & Jim Hill, Roger Sheahen, Dana & Linda Farden, Ray Ockuly, Steve Cease, Daisy Melkey, Charyl Gargel, Vicki Linkovich, Lee & Paul Krueger, Mary Lisan, Julie Reardon, Rhonda Fuller, Maria Roesner, Sheila Ramsdell, Erik Taada, Rick Janka, Dick Collins (our photographer), Kris & Bruce Holtman, Tom & Dana Ando, Barb Hetrick, and the 8 members of the Tasco Team.
Thanks also to all our 2011 members and newsletter advertisers who supported us all year.
All in all it was a great time and if you missed it we hope to see you at next year's picnic on Sunday October 14th.

SPAN Neighborhoods Honor Our First Responders Oct. 8th...use picture #2 of SPAN pics
This event was the collaborative effort of SPAN (Southern Pinellas Area Neighborhoods) which includes Broadwater and our neighbors in Lakewood Estates, Greater Pinellas Point, Bahama Shores, Coquina Key, and Maximo Moorings. We honored our Firefighters from Fire Houses 8 & 11 and our District 1 Police Officers at Lake Vista Park with 300 residents from the six neighborhoods attending. Plaques were presented to both Fire Houses and the Police Officers and food and door prizes were donated by 57 generous area merchants. A dunk tank and grand prize drawing raised $329 for the Fallen Officers Monument planned for Demens Landing in Downtown St. Petersburg. A strolling minstrel and Police K-9 demonstration entertained the entire crowd and the children enjoyed face painting and a fire truck. Evelyn Hill, Rhonda Fuller, Tom Ando, and Julie Reardon donated their time to help make this great event happen.

Carefest 2011
Broadwater is Caretagious!
On September 24th the City of St. Petersburg took part in a nationwide event called Carefest. Carefest is a day dedicated to organizing volunteers for a variety of projects designed to improve the quality of life for neighborhoods and individuals in need. Eleven Broadwater volunteers staffed the registration tent at Lake Vista Park and their hours were counted toward fulfillment of our neighborhood grant match. Roger Sheahen, Paul & Lee Krueger, Charlie Phillips, Kris Holtman, Evelyn Hill, Dick Collins, Charyl Gargel, Mike & Junia Milvain, and Tom Ando were able to efficiently check in 126 volunteer groups (with a record 2,779 total volunteers) that completed 107 projects city-wide. Broadwater intends to participate in this event next year and we encourage everyone to get involved and be Bee Caretagious!

Easing Lower Back Pain: Strengthen and Stretch the
Muscles that Support Your Spine!
Almost everyone endures lower back pain at some point in time. Pain can be caused by a variety of reasons ranging from serious traumatic injury, to birth defects, degenerative conditions, mishaps, and overuse. If you are experiencing chronic back pain, I strongly encourage you to see a physician; a physician who is interested in your long-term back health not one looking for a quick fix.
Fortunately, lower back pain is often a temporary condition, and there are ways to help ease the pain and build a stronger spine. Provided your physician has cleared you for such exercise, below are a few simple exercises and stretches that you can do in your own home to promote a healthier and happier back. Unless otherwise specified, each pose should be held at least ten seconds and/or for five deep breaths. Note that if any of these exercises "hurt" beyond feeling a gentle stretch, modify your position or stop performing the exercise.
